Tripindi Shraddha: When Three Generations of Ancestors Need Peace
Reviewed by Acharya Krishnakant Shashtri · Updated 24 June 2026
The ritual prescribed when shraddha has been missed for three years or more, and the pitru dosh symptoms that point to it.

What Tripindi Shraddha means
Tripindi Shraddha is performed for ancestors of three generations whose shraddha has not been done for three years or more, and for souls that remain restless in the pret, pishach or brahmarakshas state. Three pindas are offered — to Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh — releasing the ancestral debt carried by the family.
Signs of pitru dosh in a family
- ◆Delays in marriage and childbirth across siblings
- ◆Money that arrives and drains without explanation
- ◆Chronic ill health in the eldest son or the family head
- ◆Repeated dreams of departed elders
- ◆Rites of an ancestor left incomplete or forgotten
The vidhi and the right day
The ritual takes four to five hours in a single day: sankalp, Kalash puja, the three pind daan offerings, tarpan on the Godavari, havan, brahmin bhojan and dana. Amavasya, Pitru Paksha and the Panchami tithi are the most auspicious windows; the ritual can be performed on other days when a valid muhurat exists.
Cost, proxy and travel
Dakshina is told upfront. If the family cannot travel, the Acharya performs the sankalp by proxy in your name and gotra with a live video link and a full photo-video record. Stay and darshan assistance is arranged for families arriving from outside Nashik.
The significance of the Three Pindas
Unlike standard shraddha which uses one pinda, Tripindi uses three. One pinda is for the satisfy the 'Pret' souls ( Brahma pinda), one for the 'Antariksh' souls (Vishnu pinda), and one for the 'Patal' souls (Mahesh pinda). This comprehensive offering ensures that ancestors at all levels of existence are reached and pacified.
