Narayan Nagbali Puja: The Three-Day Vidhi Performed Only at Trimbakeshwar
Reviewed by Acharya Krishnakant Shashtri · Updated 5 July 2026
Why this three-day anushthan is performed nowhere else, what happens on each day, and the rules a family must follow.

Why only at Trimbakeshwar
Narayan Nagbali is prescribed in the Garuda Purana and, by tradition, is performed only at Trimbakeshwar on the banks of the Godavari. Narayan Bali liberates ancestral souls that departed unnaturally or without proper rites; Nag Bali atones for the sin of harming a serpent, especially the Nagas considered sacred in the family lineage.
Who should perform it
Families usually come to this ritual after a pattern rather than a single event.
- ◆Repeated unnatural deaths or untimely loss in the family
- ◆Childlessness or repeated miscarriage with no medical cause
- ◆Ancestors who died without shraddha or last rites
- ◆Persistent financial ruin across generations
- ◆Recurring dreams of departed elders asking for something
Day by day
Day one: sankalp, Kalash sthapana, Punyahavachan and Narayan Bali with the pind daan of the departed soul. Day two: Nag Bali, with the wheat-flour serpent effigy, its symbolic cremation and the prescribed offerings. Day three: havan, tarpan, brahmin bhojan, dana and visarjan.
The ritual runs across three consecutive days and the yajman must be present for all three. Fasting rules, sattvic food and abstinence are explained in detail before the booking is confirmed.
Rules the family must follow
Only one couple performs the sankalp at a time; strictly sattvic food, no onion or garlic, and no travel outside Trimbakeshwar during the three days. Widowed persons, and women who are pregnant, traditionally do not perform this anushthan — the Acharya will guide the correct alternative.
Booking and dakshina
Dakshina is confirmed before booking and covers samagri, brahmins and the three-day arrangement. Stay near the temple and local travel from Nashik can be arranged for outstation and NRI families.
Sattvic rules and discipline
Participation in Narayan Nagbali requires mental and physical purity. Devotees are expected to stay within the Trimbakeshwar kshetra for the duration, avoiding any worldly distractions. The focus remains entirely on the liberation of the ancestors and the cleansing of the lineage.
